If you want an automatic six-month extension to file your tax return, you can file Form 4868 by April 15. (If April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, federal holiday or District of Columbia holiday, the official due date moves to the next business day.) However, an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. You must pay any tax you estimate will be due by April 15 or you may be subject to interest and penalties on overdue taxes. Your actual return will be due on October 15 (or the next business day if the Saturday, Sunday, holiday rule applies).
