This compass is suitable for chart reading/navigation purposes. It is a good backup in stormy weather, too. Sometimes simpler is easier, and if overboard, it doesnt matter.

I bought this compass for my schoolwork, and I have to say that it is well worth the price. It did everything I wanted to, and for $10, it held up very well. It's a good product for someone who doesn't want to, or can't spend money for an expensive compass. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good, durable, inexpensive compass.
Really, the only "bad" things I had happen with it was that the screw holding the lead gave out a little bit, so the lead either fell out somewhat, or pushed back into the slot when in use, and the adjuster slightly bent. Which I don't believe is the manufacturer's fault. I use this for school so I keep it in my backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5by LugosiBela A great upgrade!
I've only used simple pencil compasses before. I found I had to keep measuring the width, because it could easily change by pressure, how I was holding it, etc. I was wary of buying one that only has a few lead refills, but WOW, what a difference! The wheel evenly adjusts both sides, and when you've found the size you want, it's not moving. It's awesome! The only thing is that since you're using lead instead of a pencil, you can't maintain a super sharp fine point, but you easily get used to it. And for only $8, you really can't go wrong with this. My next compass will probably be more than 6", but that's pretty much the only thing I would want to do that this one can't do already-make ridiculously huge circles. Everyone should get one. Perfect for total amateur and professional aloke.

Works great. As far as a simple tool goes, it does everything I'd expect.
