I bought this for my son at school, since he needed to be able to draw with both lead and ink. While it works well at first, the tension in the arms can give way quite easily, resulting in loss of the radius that you've set. So it it a weak in maintaining the setting.

I love this compass! It is simple to use. Holds the distance for making circles nicely. The BEST part is that you can use a multiple of mediums= pencils, color pencils, ink pens, marking pens- to make the circles. Other compasses limit you to pencils or special leads. It is easy for students to use and holds the distance needed for making accurate archs and circles. Because of the sharp point, I would avoid using it with students who are too young and immature to handle, but all of my students handled this compass the best of all that I have tried. Plastic ones usually are hard to use or fall apart.
