HP Officejet Pro 8100 e-Printer 4.2 5 66 66
I really like my 8100/ I really like my 8100. One of the features I really like is that the cartridges are the same ones used on the 8600, my higher speed color inkjet printer. The other thing is that when a cartridge runs out of ink, the printing stops, and you get a message that one of the cartridges is out of ink. No wasted paper and no wasted ink from the other cartridges. The 8600 works the same way and its great. July 22, 2014
HP 8100 is a great small printer. It started about two years ago with the purchase of it's big brother the Hp8600 all in one pro. After initial setup, the 8600 was such a great printer that when I had need of a second printer for production work, I immediately looked at the Hp 8100 as a possibility. It has the same basic configuration as the 8600, it just didn't have the scan, copy and fax features which I had no need to duplicate. Perfect! It used the same printer cartridges as the 8600. This reduced my inventory of printers cartridges for backup by 50%! It installed without a hiccup, wirelessly and has operated flawlessly for about the past two years. I often have both printers working together at the same time. The occasional paper jam is usually operator error. When it came time to replace my husband's old photosmart printer (too slow but still prints good photos), I didn't hesitate to search out the best pricing on the 8100 and send in my order. We haven't had time to unpack and set it up, but I expect the same quality of product the third time around. If I had to come up with a negative, the printers are on the noisy side. If you need quiet--shhhush, the baby is asleep-- then you might want to reconsider. However, if durability, reliability, and cost are factors, then the HP 8100 is for you. June 9, 2014
Love the features, but not the product Worked right out of the box for about 6 months, it interfaced with all my computers right away and the features were excellent. Then the problems started, flase paper jams or the carriage would not go all the way back without manually pushing it to the right into position. Every day I would clean the maching as per instructions, it would print flawlessly for about 20 pages, then if it was not used for more than 3 hours, it would false jam again. If it made it through the day, it would not work the next day until I took it apart and cleaned it again - very frustrating. Product support was no help, they repeatedly told me to clean it. I finally concluded the ink seems to clog up the works and makes it not work properly after the ink dries to interior surfaces, thus the required daily cleaning. I finally gave up on it and disconnedted it. I have had over 6 HP Printers over the years, this is the first one that has not worked as it was supposed to, perhaps it's a lemon, but it has really soured me from buying another one! I have read many reviews here and elsewhere of others with the same or similar problems, it must have some sort of inherent flaw. When it worked, the print was excellent, sharp, crisp, and the dupelxor worked great, it is just an unreliable printer that requires too much mainenance! I have only used HP Inks - no refills and the recommended types of paper. May 7, 2014
This is an inkjet printer I bought this to replace an aging HP K550 with printhead issues. This printer was 1/4 the cost of the K550 when it was new, and the only feature it is lacking is a second tray. Ain't technology grand? It worked out of the box, and had everything in the box that was needed to work out of it. Installation was plug-and-play in Win8.1. Wireless networking feature requires that you install the HP software that comes on a CD, and for that, I'm docking a star. How dare you make me do anything, HP? The nerve... So, yeah. I bought this printer, and it functions as a printer. It will probably do the same for you, though I cannot guarantee it. But maybe HP or Office Depot can. April 19, 2014

Answer:
Yes. it can connect directly to a computer using the cord that comes with it (double-check the description when ordering to be sure that it does actually come with the cord). When we ordered this printer it came with the cord we needed to directly connect and setting up was a breeze.

No. There is not a scanning bed, or anything that would scan a paper to allow you to copy it. This printer only prints. It does not scan or copy.

Not that I can see. The tray holds letter size paper, and I don't see another input anywhere. It also only has an output space for the standard 8.5" wide paper.

You can and it does default to just black printing, however it really isn't possible to stop them from using color in one way or another. You might want to check into a monochrome laser printer. They use only black toner.
