Functional and would look nice, had it assembled correctly. It was perfect for what I wanted it for. Guess I expected more?

Rated 4 out of 5by Grad Girl Useful in many ways
I bought mine two years ago and love it. I had it in my living room as a tv stand/bookshelf/display case. I am a graduate student who had a library of heavy textbooks that I kept on one half. I never once worried about the shelves buckling under the weight. On the other half I kept pictures of family, books for enjoyment (or DVDs depending on my decorating mood), and my entertainment devices (DVD player, Wii, etc.). The TV sat on top with ease. I have recently moved and am using the bookshelf in a bedroom with baskets as a dresser of sorts. I am also happy to say this piece has made it through 3 moves without damage and has gone beyond the expectations I had for it when I bought it.
I have only 2 aspects I would change if I could. The first is that the holes for cables and plugs are right in the middle of the back which has prevented me from changing the shelf heights. Second, I find that the trim around the front prevents items from being pulled out easily. For example, the top over hangs somewhat- so no tall books on the top shelf and if you have full shelves like I did- the items on the side get trapped.

Rated 2 out of 5by Grammy Frustrating Assembly/Not Good on Carpeted Floor
All it takes is for holes to be left undrilled or for important information to be left out of the directions for assembly to be a nightmare. Because holes were not drilled in the middle support, the screws for the bottom panel came out through the side of the middle support and damaged the veneer. Also, it would have been helpful if the directions cautioned that the middle support is actually offset to the right in order to accommodate the horizontal face-piece that slides on the middle support. If you are not aware of this, it appears as if the entire unit is being put together incorrectly (since the width of the right side shelf is actually shorter than the left side shelf) and it can be quite confusing. Once the face-piece is on, the shelves appear to be the same width. Also, there is NO support along the back underneath the bottom panel. The entire unit rests on the side supports and the bottom front face piece, so on carpet the unit leans precariously back. I had to use shims under the side supports to force the unit to be level on carpet.

I needed a book shelf for my guest/sewing room and this was just right. The TV can sit securely on top and there is a lot of space for my books/magazines.
