pull out shelf problem
Dont get me wrong, the price is ok for what you get, lots of storage space and nice design...But the its not as "easy assembly" as they say.
I put furniture together for a living and this one takes work, 2 hours worth, the instructions are not exactly clear, some pieces for the shelves are also not marked.
Biggest problem is the middle pull-out shelf, I pulled it out with only a few paper documents inside and it crashed to the floor. I looked at the mounting of the shelf and it barely hangs on, I needed to drill some screws just to make sure it holds some weight in place.
I expected much better!!!

Don't waste your money
What a cheap, shoddy piece of furniture. Terrible instructions, many pieces not marked, and after 5+ hours this thing would even hold together long enough for me to set it upright. After taking most of it apart and reesembling it using Gorilla Glue and woodscrews in addition to the trash part that came with it now feels sturdy enough to last 2-3 years.

Great desk
I've been using the desk just over a week, and I love it. Sturdy! Very sturdy desk. Yes, putting it together is a little complicated...but only in that it has a lot of pieces and all of them must be put together. But all the pieces add up to a very solid desk, not a cheaply constructed piece of junk that will fall apart after a few years.
Pay attention to the instructions and it really isn't bad. It will take 2 to 4 hours depending on how handy you are, so give yourself plenty of time.

Beautiful desk
This desk is a nice piece of furniture and perfect for small spaces. Others are correct: The box is heavy and, once unpacked, there are several pieces to assemble. However, I began the assembly myself and found the instructions easy to follow. My 2 kids joined in and we were able to complete the desk in about two hours. I keep my IMac and keyboard on top of the desk and we keep the kids' laptop in the middle, pull-out shelf (no need for a second desk!). Be patient, follow the directions and you will end up with a beautifully sturdy, multi-functional, compact desk.

Yes. The desk comes with two metal rods that can be placed in the drawer for hanging standard size files only (legal size files will NOT fit). The drawer is small so the files can only be placed sideways, not front to back like most filing cabinets.I like to keep my day to day files in this desk drawer and any non-essential files in a regular filing cabinet elsewhere in my house.

Here's a pic I took today, 2/5/13. Yes, there are bars for folders. I put a folder in the drawer to demonstrate that the file drawer does not pull out all the way. You can move the bars to the front most holes (be sure to do this upon assembly - the back one can't be changed after it's assembled). The folders will still have to be angled slightly to put them into the drawer. Might be a pain if you have a full file drawer.Gender:Female

This was also my main question & this answer was not here before I left for the store to look at this desk earlier today. If you flip down the front panel for the keyboard tray, it makes it 18" deep. It's a really nice size tray. Will easily accomodate both a keyboard & mouse. One thing to note, the file drawer (lower drawer) does not pull all the way out to allow the standard size hanging folder to just drop in. You have to angle the folder to get it in. Otherwise, this is a nice looking desk for a great price & I'll probably buy it. You can add a neat hutch on top as well for a little over a $100.Gender:Female

Does the 59"W refer to the desk top? And how many inches does the top hang over the side panels?
I have only a 58"W space due to a low window sill, but I will be able to fit this desk if it is no more than 58"W, measuring from the left edge of the desk top to the outer part of the right side panel (hope that makes sense). I appreciate the help. Many thanks.

Yes. The 59" refers to the desktop. The body of the desk is actually 57", so it appears that the desktop overhang on each side is about 1".Hope that helps!
