I think it's terrific that OfficeMax offers this service free of charge. I'm finding it difficult to find places that will recycle used toner cartridges, which is a shame because otherwise they'll end up in a landfill.
Kudos to OfficeMax!

What to do with the 4 empty toner cartridges left over after you change all of them? This is the solution. It is environmentally sound, and totally free!! The only drawback is that this box would probably hold 16-20 cartridges! So for a homeowner, a soultion is needed. You'll need to have package tape anyway to close it up, so my solutiion was to cut it down to fit the 4 cartridges I had, then seal it up and hand it to UPS. They will still accept it with its prepaid label, which is already applied to the box (so be careful what parts you cut away). Apparently the label is not constrained to the size of the box.
One could keep the box until it were full, but for us that would take about 10 years. No way to know if the label, the recycling program, or even Office Depot itself will be around that far into the future. So cutting it down worked, and we recycled the removed cardboard.

They send the box, I fill it and send it away. Keeps my old cartridges out of the waste bins.

Rated 5 out of 5by Pangraz A Wonderful Idea & Service From Office Depot!
Upon my request Office Depot sent me two very sturdy shipping boxes (as unfolded "flats") to contain and ship POSTAGE-FREE returns of used toner cartridges. A wonderful idea and great FREE service in an era and culture whose memory might be marked by mountains of trash on land and in the sea. I understand that, when returned, the plastic and metal cartridges are re-used as well. Way to go, Office Depot, way to go!
