Rated 4.3 out of 5?by 25 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5?by Very good program for learning a New language I was taught a little French when I was young. I have tried books and tapes. The Rosetta stone has increased my confidence and understanding of the language. I can understand and write the vocabulary but my confidence with a continued conversation needs building. They say it takes 10,000 hrs to learn the skill; I hope in the next four months to utilize the conversation option of the Rosetta program. Merci Rosetta tr?s bien December 12, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5?by Ce est bon, mais cher! I went to the Rosetta Stone site and tried the little free sample of the system. It was interesting, but the price was out of my budget range, and some parts of the interface were difficult to get through (It's sometimes unclear what you're expected to do next, and there are spelling drills that really require that you have written notes, and this also was not clear going in). So, I politely exited, but I immediately started getting an avalanche of offers: Sometimes 4 a day, and for 4 different prices! Really, once you see that they are willing to sell for a lower price, is there any rationale for them continuing to send offers for higher prices? Anyway, I finally took them up one one of the offers. Installation didn't go well - their install program kept hanging or taking a very long time to finish, but then the program would not run. I sent a problem report to them but I've never gotten a reply. Before giving up and cancelling the purchase to get my money back, I decided to surf a bit and see if anyone else was experiencing a similar problem. Luckily, I found a solution and was able to get it running. The interface is one of "total immersion" - all you see and hear is pictures and the language you are studying. The pace of advancement is uneven. Sometimes, it seems they are expecting you to see or hear something once, and then remember it forever after. Other times, you get quite a bit of repetition which, in my case is certainly welcome and necessary. I mentioned spelling. You get to see the words spelled out, but suddenly being asked to write them can be harrowing - especially if the languge has unusual accent or diacritical marks. The spelling quizzes need a "hint" feature. It's too early on for me to make an overall judgement regarding the system's effectiveness, but I will mention that for now, I'm zipping along at quite a nice pace. On a 10-star rating system, I'd give it a solid 8. It could be (still) cheaper, and the developers should do more sitting side-by-side with new users to see where the rough spots remain. Rated 3 out of 5?by Just Starting Getting started was a little more difficult than i thought, and there aren't really good instructions to help you along. My microphone would not connect but the live chat personnel were quick to resolve that. The learning process is good and i feel i am learning quite quickly but there are some things i wish they would explain a little better ( like why a car is plural, and feminine ). All in all i am pleased with my start and am looking forward to the next section. December 11, 2014
