WD My Passport� Portable USB 3.0 Hard Drive, 2TB, Black 4.7 5 1228 1228

Not recommending this product (2 TB version) Regular consumer of WD products, with several other portable drives, was the first time ever that after getting the product up to speed, transfered my collection of pictures and movies. Used it a couple of times, suddenly stopped working regularly (light blinks, sometimes get access to disk drive and files, but very slow speed). September 25, 2013

Stopped working I havn't even had this 24 hours and it stopped working! It just blinks and whirrs and won't connect. No matter what I read or look at or anything I can't find out how to fix this so I've come to the conclusion that it stopped working. Completely. Can't even get my data off. Worthless. Great product but... Great item-small and sleek in it's styling and just big enough to stash in the briefcase---but, Maybe I am partial to "HP Simple Save" (larger, not as portable-but it plugs in and Back-Ups almost instantly) September 6, 2013

Excellent product, but with a small issue I recently had a 1TB Caviar Black HD start to fail in my PC (after 6 years of heavy 24/7/365 use). I was able to clone it to a new drive, but the close call finally got me to do something about backup. I got the 2TB Passport. I had to tell my BIOS not to boot from it, but otherwise setup was super easy. The problem I had was with the continuous backup feature. Once it started, I could not shut it off. I ended up having to format the drive. Instead of the preinstalled backup software it came with, I'm now using the WD Acronis True Image backup program. That is working flawlessly and I have total control. The Passport even goes to sleep after finishing which is a nice feature. It would be nice if WD modified the Smart software to allow for better user control, and gave an option on install to use that or the Acronis True Image software. Otherwise, I am very happy with my purchase. I have used WD drives exclusively for 30 years with only three failures. Can't beat that record in my opinion. August 24, 2013

This may not help much but I have used it for every version of windows imaginable (I do not have windows 8) but a back up of this sort should be instantly compatible

We've talked to lots of people and we've heard the reasons why people don't back up - there's no time; it's a pain; their data's not organized; they don't know how. Using what we've learned, we developed easy, automatic backup software we hope you'll really use because we understand the importance of your data.
It's easy.

You're up and running in a few simple steps. Once you set it up, you can forget it because the rest is automatic.
It finds your data.
- A unique visual interface lets you see the WD drives connected toyour computer.
- WD SmartWare automatically scans your computer and finds all of your personal files, including e-mail.
- Select the files and folders that you want backed up or back up your files by category. It's up to you.
- The backup gauges show how much information you have to be backed up in each category. You can even mouse over a category to see afile count.
- Simply click "Start Backup" and WD SmartWare will automatically start backing up your files.
- As your backup is running the category gauges will change color showing you the backup as it happens.
- When finished, you'll see a status screen and information about your backup. You only have to do this once. After the first backup, your files will be backed up automatically every time you change or add a file.
It's always on the job.

WD SmartWare is always watching your computer, so when you change a file and save it, create new files, add new pictures, movies, or songs, WD SmartWare will instantly back them up.
It's easy to bring back lost files.
If you ever accidentally delete an important file, or need to get an earlier version of a file, you can find and retrieve it in seconds with the easy-to-use retrieve interface.
- Restore all of the files you’ve backed up or select a particular file or folder. Use the search function to easily find a lost file.
- Set the number of versions you want to save so you can go back in time to retrieve an older version of a file.
