Rated 2.5 out of 5by 4 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5by Worst Purchase Ever The problems start with what may be the worst User's Guide that I have ever encountered. This is frustrating, but it would be even more frustrating if the product being introduced were worth pursuing. Instead, we get an approach that assumes that an adult learning a second language does it in the same way as a 2-year-old learning a first language. Does no one at Rosetta Stone ever look at the relevant language learning literature? The fact that your prices are so outrageous only adds to the insult. December 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5by Okay Learning Tool But Not Great I already knew a tiny amount of Japanese before starting Rosetta Stone Japanese, so I could use this product without too much difficulty but for an absolute beginner Rosetta Stone might be a bit tough. They don't really explain anything in English. It's really just seeing a picture and hearing Japanese, I had to use a Japanese to English dictionary quite often. However Rosetta stone does do a good job of trying to hammer things in. It definitely helps in learning the language. However at the end of all three levels you won't be anywhere near fluent, not even close. But you have to be realistic in that regard. It takes a long time to learn a language and there really isn't one product that does the job but Rosetta Stone does help. However it does just focus on polite level of speech and not informal. It also doesn't force you to write Japanese which can be a bad thing. If you want to be fluent in Japanese you really need to learn hiragana, katakana and kanji, and you have to learn those by writing them. I wish it had more levels, there's certainly more vocabulary they can add. Anyway, I've enjoyed it and I think it is worth the money. December 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5by Very Good teaching method I have been involved with the Japanese language since 1963. I had never taken any lessons, but my ability to construct sentences were never very good. I could generally understand basic daily conversation, but speaking was always very difficult. This system had in a few lessons helped me a lot in my speaking ability. I am also learning how to used my vocabulary much better. I am right now only on level two, but I feel that as I continue with this program, both vocabulary and speaking ability will improve a lot. My only complaint is that I wish their voice recognition worked better. It works ok, but my Dragon Naturally speaking voice recognition works much better. December 11, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5by Program really needs work I don't like this program very much for Japanese. I can pick up on basic words, but none of the sentences. Plus, it was hard at times to know what the picture was talking about. Like on one of them, it showed a boy next to another boy, then the other three pictures were basically the same but had completely different sentences to go with it. I couldn't tell if the boy standing next to him was his brother, cousin, friend, or someone else. Another thing, they do not tell you the importance of the sentence markers (wa, ga, ka, mo) which are REALLY important to learning Japanese as they are used all the time. When I saw the sentence that meant "What are you doing?" it confused me. I wanted to know, what did Nani mean and what did the ka at the end mean. I only saw ka a few times and wondered how it fit in with the sentence. If you don't know, ka is the verbal question mark, but I never learned that though this program! Lastly, this program is teaching formal Japanese. In Japan, you will most likely hear casual Japanese over formal Japanese. If you learn formal first, then casual it's like working backwards. Over all, I would not recommend this to any of my friends. Resently, I have found a program that is AMAZING in teaching Japanese because it actually has a translation, uses funny little things to help you remember words, teaches you grammar, and so much more. There are other ways to learn a language, I suggest you seek them. December 9, 2011

  • What is Rosetta Stone?

Rosetta Stone is an interactive computer software program designed to make language acquisition easy and intuitive. It uses a mixture of words, pictures, speaking and listening in the course work. Rosetta Stone also provide live interactive tutors and a social network of other language learners to practice with! There's no books, no memorizing, no grammar tables.

  • How does the Rosetta Stone method work?

Dynamic Immersion® is the cornerstone of the Rosetta Stone method. By eliminating translation and grammar explanations from language learning, Dynamic Immersion activates your own natural language-learning ability. You begin to think in your new language from the very beginning—the same way you learned your first language.

You constantly interact with the software by connecting words with images to confirm their meaning—all through a carefully designed sequence that helps you build grammatically-accurate language structure step by step.

  • How much time will it take me to learn a new language with the Rosetta Stone solution?

It will take about 40–50 hours to complete the content in each level. In addition, for the duration of your online services, you'll enjoy access to our live online sessions and online language-learning community to practice and refine your skills. Remember, each learner is different. Some will use the program on a daily basis, while others will log in less frequently. The more you use the Rosetta Stone® solution, the more quickly you'll learn a language.

  • How is the Rosetta Stone method different from traditional language learning?

Traditional methods explain the meaning and structure of a new language through translation and grammar rules in your native language. As a result, you can't understand or use your new language without thinking in your native language. This extra step slows learning and makes speaking a new language intimidating and laborious. The Rosetta Stone® solution eliminates translation and tedious grammar explanations, allowing you to intuitively grasp new concepts, all while thinking exclusively in your new language.

Unlike videos or books, our solution is all about interaction. At every step, you have to actively demonstrate your understanding of a new language. And Rosetta Stone software provides the opportunity to develop all your language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—from the beginning, using your own natural language-learning ability.

  • Does the Rosetta Stone solution work?

Millions of learners around the world have discovered a language with the Rosetta Stone® solution—from individuals to corporate clients such as NASA, the US State Department, and more than 10,000 schools.

  • Do you teach with English translations? What if you need them? Will they ever come?

From the very beginning, the language you're learning is the only one you will use. Meaning no direct translations, charts, or tables. Our approach prescribes no supplemental materials. Through listening, reading, speaking, and writing, you'll build the core building blocks. While it may be daunting to not have English translations to fall back on, we assure you it will come naturally. After all, it's how you learned to speak in the first place.
