    HP Pavilion 15-n040us TouchSmart Laptop Computer With 15.6 Touch-Screen Display & 4th Gen Intel Core? i3 Processor 4 5 6 6
Affordable, well-made touchscreen! I am upgrading from a Sony Vaio running W7 that I purchased 5-6 years ago at a big box store for $699. I prefer to buy the "budget" laptops because computers become outdated so quickly. After extensive research, I had narrowed down my choices to a Dell and an HP. Probably the real kicker for me was the build-quality. The HP looks and feels like a $1000 machine, whereas the Dell was very cheap plastic and flexible. It is just not a durable machine and I would advise to steer clear of that particular brand. I was able to find his n040us at Office Depot for $479.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. I had looked at several online retailers and most sold this exact machine for over $600. It's great bang for your buck and the touchscreen is a nice added bonus. I certainly do NOT regret getting the touchscreen. To maximize the potential of W8, you really need a touchscreen. You'll end up using it more than you think! As far as the specs of the machine, it has the latest 4th Generation I3 and 4GB of RAM. Not super-speedy, but adequate. I use this machine for everyday home use. Web browsing, apps, Microsoft Office, iTunes library, and burning BluRays on an external drive. I haven't actually had the chance to burn BluRays yet, but I'm sure it will be fine. It has 2 USB 3.0 ports and data transfer from my external HD to my laptop was extremely fast. I transferred over 300GB of HD video and it took maybe 10 minutes! The 750GB hard drive is nice, although you only end up with around 690GB useable. I've had no issues with the wifi, the only major item it DOES NOT have is Bluetooth. It's not a big deal really. Definitely not a deal-breaker. The machine I have has a glossy-silver lid that hides the fingerprints a bit better than the inside where the keyboard is black and surrounded by a black glossy material (same as the lid). The keyboard is comfortable and made well. Very easy to type on. It has the numeric key pad but I NEVER use it. Touchscreen seems to work well and is great with W8. The screen is not 1920x1080, a step down from that but still very clear and bright. No complaints. I will try to add a comment later on as I continue to use this machine, seeing as I haven't had it long. But for $479.99 you'll have a very HARD time beating this setup. January 22, 2014
Not for me Purchased this pc about a week ago and have not been impressed. The salesman told me I could upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. When I was finally able to find the download (which wasn't easy), I started the download. That was over an hour ago. It's so slow! Hopeful that all downloads won't be as slow. Not easy to use the touchscreen either. If you're scrolling and get too close the edge of the screen, you're going to open another screen. That might be something I can get used to. Also slow start up. January 11, 2014
Another great HP product! Using Windows 8.1 is quite different from previous Windows versions. I'm learning new 'stuff' every day. In my opinion, laptops are not as speedy as PC's. I suspect as time passes we'll only buy laptops. The 1st laptop I acquired some years ago was substantially heavier than the newer ones. The lighter weight is a plus. I only gave this a 4 star rating because I'd hoped it would be as speedy as my primary PC. We have 4 computers and two tablets in our household...only two of us live here. Yes, we're technology nuts. Good buy I thought it was a good buy for the price although I am waiting for $50.00 mail in rebate. It was easy set up but I also thought office was included. I also liked Norton security came with it. December 14, 2013

No, the screen does not disconnect from the keyboard. I've chosen to use a wireless keyboard and mouse with this laptop since I don't quite get the hang of using the built in keyboard and navigation board. I envy people who caught onto using the built in features!

    Answer:
Unfortunately, exact battery run time and life span information is not available. Various factors, such as the temperature of the battery, the applications running on the notebook, any attached devices, the brightness of the display, and the notebook power management settings all determine the run time and life span of your battery. Also, the performance and charge times of Lithium-ion batteries decrease over time. There are suggested ways to help increase the run time and life span of your battery:

    - Reduce the brightness of the screen to the minimum readable level
    - Remove peripherals (External hard drives, CD-ROMs, Zip drives, PC cards, and other peripheral devices) when not in use; these devices can draw power from your battery even when they are not in active use
    - Reduce the speed of your processor
    - Turn off the Wireless On-Off button when it is not in use (If your notebook has one)

I'm a musician, and looking into a new computer. As such, I'm determined to find something with GOOD speakers. My current computer has fantastic speakers, but most of my friends' computers have poor quality speakers that get crackly at any "loud" volume. I'm looking for something that retains the original quality of sound, and doesn't sound like a cheap stereo.
