Recycled and Post-Consumer Recycled Paper School Supplies
The acceptable range for paper school supplies such as art paper, notebooks and Kraft paper that contain a percentage of recycled paper material is 10% to 100% for post-consumer recycled content and 50% to 100% for total recycled content (pre-consumer plus post-consumer). Recycled school supplies are environmentally preferable since they help to reduce waste, decrease pressure on forests and lessen energy, greenhouse gases and water and air emissions.
Alternative Fiber Products
Alternative fibers such as banana fiber, sugarcane and straw can be used to make paper. This helps to reduce pressure on forests and convert agricultural waste byproducts into useful raw materials.
Certified AP Non-Toxic
Pencils, Crayons and Paints that are Certified AP Non-Toxic contain fewer harsh chemicals than non-certified products. The Arts and Crafts Institute is an industry group that has developed safety standards for art supplies. The institute's toxicologists consider the concentration and potential health effects of ingredients. A product that is Certified AP (Approved Product) Non- Toxic has been "certified in a program of toxicological evaluation by a medical expert to contain no materials in sufficient quantities to be toxic or injurious to humans or cause acute or chronic health problems."
