Verbatim M DISC optical media is the new standard for digital archival storage. Unlike traditional optical media, which utilize dyes that can break down over time, data stored on an M DISC is engraved on a patented inorganic write layer - it will not fade or deteriorate. This unique engraving process renders these archival grade discs practically impervious to environmental exposure, including light, temperature and humidity.ISO/IEC 16963 standard longevity tests have proven the durability of M DISC technology, and it withstood rigorous testing by the US Department of Defense. Based on ISO/IEC 16963 testing, M DISC media has a projected lifetime of several hundred years. With industry-leading expected disc lifetimes, and 120-minutes of DVD quality storage capacity, Verbatim M DISC DVDR are an ideal archival solution for home movies and video clips, as well as backing up music and video libraries.

Features & Benefits
M DISC DVDNow, more than ever, technology plays an increasingly important role in our lives. Every day, we create more and more digital files – from selfies to home movies to important documents. And if your smartphone or computer is compromised, you can lose all these memories in a heartbeat. Backing up and archiving your data has become critical to ensure your data lives on.
Back-up vs. ArchiveThe difference between backing-up your data and archiving your data is subtle, but important. Backing-up data is usually done on a regular basis, to account for any changes that may have been made. Archiving is a more permanent solution – ideally, you archive your data, making several copies in case one set is stolen or lost, and your data remains safe for years to come.
Different types of data storage products can assist with these processes in different ways. USB drives are great for small data backup or file transfers. However, they use flash chips, which can only retain data for up to ten years. Hard drives can be great for system backups, but the large number of mechanical parts mean they are susceptible to failure. Backing-up data to the cloud means you can access the data anywhere in the world. But the cloud is susceptible to security breaches and system failures, and if you don’t have internet access, you can’t access your data.
Optical media is the ideal media for archiving, being durable enough to last for years without bulky, mechanical parts. Verbatim M DISC media is the most durable of all, designed to last for hundreds of years without deteriorating.
LongevityOn M DISC media, data is engraved on a patented, rock-like layer which is resistant to heat and light, protecting your files for several lifetimes. This makes M DISC media an ideal solution for archiving – data is protected for hundreds of years without being susceptible to deterioration or failure.
CompatibilityTo burn M DISC media, you will need an M DISC ready drive. Drives that are M DISC ready will often have the M DISC logo on the drive. Check with the drive manufacturer if you’re unsure.
In terms of playing M DISC media, since optical drives have evolved to be fully backwards compatible, your drive purchased today should be able to play M DISC media with no problems. Again, check with the drive manufacturer for clarification.
Non-Erasable and Non-MagneticLike standard DVD-R media, Verbatim M DISC media is write-once, meaning that once data is recorded, it cannot be accidentally erased.
Unlike hard drives or tape-based media, optical discs are not vulnerable to damage from magnetic fields. Optical media is the most durable data storage product and is idea for keeping data preserved.
Will M DISC DVD’s work with my current disc drive? To check if M DISC DVD media is compatible with your current disc drive, your drive needs to be “M DISC Ready.” You can confirm this either with the manufacturer of your disc drive or some drives will have the M DISC logo on the drive itself, indicating its compatibility. Verbatim’s External Slimline CD/DVD Drive is M DISC ready.
