What is caution tape?

Caution tape, also called safety tape, is a type of tape meant to serve as a barrier. It’s frequently used in areas where there’s a potential safety threat or hazard, warning people that they should stay away. For example, it might be used to block off access to an abandoned building or a dangerous site in a construction zone.

This tape can also be used in more common instances, such as to indicate a wet patch on the floor where people might slip if they step. Teachers may want to have caution tape in their school supply essentials in case they need to keep kids out of a certain area.

One main brand of caution tape is 3M, a popular adhesives producer.

What are the different types of caution tape?

The most common type of caution tape is yellow with black “Caution” lettering. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has different specifications for the different colors of caution tape and their meanings.

For example, red and white caution tape is used for fire protection, while black and white caution tape is for housekeeping and aisle marketing. Green and white is for safety and first aid, while orange and white is for traffic warnings.

How should caution tape be used?

Caution tape should only be used for its intended purpose — to indicate a hazard or risk. It shouldn’t be used for decorative purposes or as a general adhesive. To use caution tape, make sure to get the right color. OSHA has specific guidelines about caution tape colors and what they mean.

Next, make sure to properly apply the tape. Caution tape should clearly demarcate the risky or hazardous area, ideally being placed in a way so that it creates a physical barrier. For example, to block access to a room, place caution tape in a large X across the entire door.
