Bleacher Creatures: Keep Comfort a Priority During Games
March 12, 2017
Whether you're cheering on your alma mater at the big weekend football game or waiting for the final out of a no-hitter, staying focused is a lot easier when your comfort level is high. Cheer on your favorite team from the bleachers or the sidelines by making sure you are stocked with all the sports essentials. From portable sports chairs and coolers to umbrellas and portable fans, bring along everything you need to brave the elements and have a great time with fellow fans.
Beat the Heat
It's hard to enjoy the game when you're roasting in the sun and sweat is pouring down your face. Lather yourself in sunscreen to block those harmful UV rays. Choose a water-resistant variety with an SPF of 30 or greater. If you have sensitive skin, look for products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are more gentle. Single-use sunscreen towelettes provide hassle-free application and are easy to stash in your purse, glove box or sports bag.
Umbrellas aren't just for the rain; keep one in the trunk of your car to provide much-needed shade on the sidelines while you sit in your portable chairs. Keep a damp towel or bandana in your cooler so you can place it on your neck if the heat becomes unbearable. Carry a personal fan or misting system to help keep you cool, and wear light-colored clothes with moisture-wicking properties.
Pack the Snacks
You miss out on precious seconds of the game when you're running back and forth to the concession stand for food and drinks. Whether you're supplying refreshments for yourself or all of your friends, there are plenty of options to consider. Pick up pre-packaged bags of veggie chips and straws to provide a healthy alternative to greasy potato chips. Freeze yogurt tubes overnight to create a delicious and nutritious popsicle that cools you down during hot games. Be sure to fill your cooler with bottled water and sports drinks to keep yourself well hydrated throughout the game.
Cut out the Chill
Will it be too cold to sit through the whole football game? Dress in three layers to keep warm; start with a quick-drying fabric as your base, add an insulating layer of fleece or wool, and finish with a windproof and waterproof shell. Keep several blankets and pairs of gloves in your car, and fill a thermos with coffee or hot chocolate to keep you toasty as you witness every amazing touchdown.
Sit in Cushioned Comfort
Sitting on cold, hard bleachers for hours can cause even the most devoted fan to wish for the game to end. Always keep a few outdoor folding chairs in the trunk of your car so you're ready to kick back on the sidelines. If you're looking to travel lighter, look for padded bleacher seats that provide back support and a cushioned sitting surface.
Keep Little Ones Occupied
If you're missing every goal because you’re keeping a close eye on your small children, come up with some activities to occupy their time. Fill a tote bag with things that hold their attention, such as crayons, coloring pages, puzzle books, bubbles, a Frisbee or a deck of cards. Create a scavenger hunt to send them on a search of things found at the field, including acorns and four-leaf clovers. Give them a job, such as keeping track of the number of hits each inning or the number of interceptions a certain player catches.
Make sure you're ready to root for the home team when sports season approaches. Whether you're weathering the elements, creating comfortable seating or keeping the kids entertained, you're sure to enjoy the game and never miss out on seeing that grand slam in the bottom of the ninth.
