The Newest Holiday Shopping Trends for 2018 and How to Score Deals!

Two of the busiest—and most highly anticipated—shopping days of the year are approaching quickly: Black Friday (November 23) and Cyber Monday (November 26).
Savvy consumers can score great deals on these days. But while discounts and other promotions abound, it is good to be aware of what trends are driving this year’s retail deals. This can help you maximize your savings, and have a more enjoyable shopping experience. Here are some key ways to take advantage of this year’s shopping trends.
Shop via mobile
The National Retail Federation projects that U.S. holiday sales will increase 4.3 to 4.8 percent this year, thanks to growing wages, new tax cuts and an overall healthy economy. But all indications suggest that sales via mobile device will see a much bigger jump. Purchases made via mobile phones are expected to account for a whopping 40 percent of all e-commerce sales. Many large retailers have spurred this trend by introducing mobile apps and making the mobile shopping experience more convenient and enjoyable. Many retailers offer extra perks to mobile shoppers, such as mobile-only discounts and sending push notifications about on-sale items or when orders ship out.
Try to make sure you have downloaded your favorite retailers’ mobile apps on your smartphone before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and that the app is updated to the latest version, so you don’t miss out!
Take advantage of in-store experiences
Though e-commerce is on the upswing, many shoppers still head to physical stores around the holidays. Their shopping experience may start online but end in a store, or vice versa. In fact, a survey featured in Harvard Business Review found that 73% of shopper journeys are “omnichannel.” Around the holidays, especially, you can often find in-store promotions including free products and services, holiday-themed events (cookies and tea, anyone?), and perhaps even coupons that will provide extra savings if you ultimately decide to make purchases online.
Follow the deals
The savviest of shoppers make a list of what they want to purchase over the holiday season and then find the best deals on those items. Also try not to forget to check for online promo codes and coupons: RetailMeNot offers codes and coupons that can be used both in store and online.
Try to keep in mind that free shipping offers, which are plentiful around the holidays, can shave $10 or more off your bill—though may only be available if you buy early enough to accept the longest delivery wait time.
Don’t forget a gift for a VIP: you!
Self-gifting—that is, buying gifts for ourselves—has become a big trend around the holidays. While shopping for family and friends, we inevitably see things we’d like to have. And the price may be right. A survey by NPD Group last year found that 19% of consumers planned to spend more on themselves over the holiday season, and 40% were considering it.
This holiday shopping season is likely to be a bountiful one, but you can make the most of it by planning ahead and staying on top of the deals that matter most to you.
