How to Prepare for College: The College Dorm Room Essentials You Need Now

There’s no place like home…until you move into your college dorm. Finally…the chance to keep your own schedule, eat what you want, clean your own bathroom, do your own laundry.
Wait! What? Yes, that’s right. While it’s easy to think that your college dorm room needs include some Twin XL bedding and your textbooks, there is far more to it than that. Take a look at some of these “forgotten categories” to make sure your dorm room is well-equipped with the essentials.
Did you know that some schools are banning laptops in classes? Not only can they be distracting, but studies show that taking notes by hand can improve retention. That’s why it’s smart to stock up on notebooks, folders and pens for note taking and organization; sticky notes and highlighters to help with your textbooks; and notecards for last-minute quizzing as you cross the quad.
Yes, you’ll still need a laptop, and you might want a game console to help you meet new neighbors for a Fortnite tournament. Other handy additions can be flash drives and a printer (don't forget extra toner!). Many students also find that an ethernet cable is crucial to bolster slow dorm WiFi.
Put down the controller; it’s time to study. While the library might provide a quiet haven, you’ll also want to make sure your desk is outfitted with everything you need so you don’t have to cross campus every time you want to crack the books. You can get baskets and trays to corral the supplies mentioned above and make sure you have a really good desk light.
Dorm room décor
You can spruce up your dorm walls with photo collages of family and friends, and don’t forget pennants or flags from your high school or college teams. (Pro tip: Get some no-damage wall hangers to avoid an end-of-year fine for nail or pushpin holes.) Aside from that, you’re going to want a few pieces that are both functional and decorative, such as an ottoman with built-in storage and cube bookcases that can hold books, photos, baskets and more.
Not all rooms will have their own dedicated space, but if you have a kitchenette, you’ll want to consider the basics like a coffee maker, paper towel holder, silverware caddy, dish drainer and a set of dishes and cutlery. (If you don’t want to fight over whose turn it is to do the dishes, you can always go with paper products, as well). Many dorms don’t allow hot pots or toaster ovens, so check the regulations before buying other small appliances.
If you’re lucky enough to have an in-room bathroom area, rejoice! You can outfit it with a toothbrush holder, bins for cotton balls and swabs, a shower curtain liner and trash can. Liven it up with a funky shower curtain and bath mat and coordinating towels. And if you have to shuffle down the hall, grab a sturdy caddy to transport all your toiletries.
Laundry and cleaning essentials
Yes, that task now falls to you. You can keep cleaning easy by stocking up on all-in-one products like multi-surface eco-friendly cleaning wipes, a mop and sweeper with disposable pads and laundry pods. You can grab a laundry basket along with a space-saving ironing board or steamer.
And finally, you’ll want to make sure you have all your faves on hand for a late-night study session.
