Inspire Creativity by Designing a Modern, Collaborative Office
August 3, 2017
Happiness and productivity go together at work. If the members of your team feel appreciated, they'll be empowered to be more involved in the business and their creativity and productivity will soar! Look at this as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Start by creating welcoming and softly designed common areas for both breaks and meetings. You'll soon discover that an inspiring break room environment can change the entire mood of your office in a truly positive way.
Design plays a big role in creating great collaborative spaces. If you have the luxury of an open office in terms of design, take advantage of that feeling of extra space by arranging the desks and work spaces so it's easy for employees to chat with their colleagues. Encourage interaction between and among employees who might not otherwise see each other because they work in different departments. You never know when someone from accounting might have a brilliant idea that helps with a development problem, or vice versa.
Even the more traditional office designs can be reconfigured to enhance collaboration. Try breaking up closed spaces with a few easily designed break areas. Place a few comfortable chairs and a small table in a common area to encourage team members to take a seat and engage in conversation.
A Little Goes a Long Way
Providing small perks, such as snacks, bottled water and soft drinks, is an affordable and easy way to boost spirits, and it also encourages employees to spend more time at work. Rather than running out during every break to pick up a bite to eat and coffee, employees are more likely to head to the break room. You can also provide healthy snacks, such as nuts, fruit and trail mix, to nourish their creativity in a more literal sense. Plenty of coffee and tea also helps encourage productivity.
Keep the snacks fresh and the break area clean. Designate a schedule for different team members to be responsible for refreshing and restocking. Make the area inviting, tasteful and even fun. Take a few minutes to check on the area throughout the day to make sure the room is welcoming and the space is neat.
Create an Inviting Environment
Invest in several quality chairs and couches to help your employees relax, which in turn, may help spark creativity. A comfortable couch or chair with a built-in writing surface can be a great choice for your meeting rooms.
Folding tables and chairs are a good choice for break rooms and collaborative spaces. Choose quality break room furniture that folds away or is easy to move out of the way when not in use. Laminate or wooden tops provide a professional appearance and are easy to clean.
In addition to your furniture choices, think about the general decor. Stark white walls with no decorations are not at all welcoming nor conducive to collaboration. Consider painting the walls a fun, inviting color, such as a light yellow or green. Choose interesting artwork for the walls. Bright abstract designs are a good choice for inspiring creative thinking and boosting the energy level in the room.
The right common areas can significantly improve employee morale and make the entire office more welcoming. A few small changes go a long way toward helping your employees relax, interact more and enjoy their time at the office.
