World Humanitarian Day Can Spur a Kinder Corporate America

We love to celebrate National Donut Day or Take Your Dog to Work Day, but one event we should all commemorate is World Humanitarian Day. This year, why not honor World Humanitarian Day by reflecting on and restoring the “humanity” of your company through finding ways to serve each other and your community?
Here are some ideas to engage your team members to acknowledge World Humanitarian Day 2018—it’s Sunday, August 19, so celebrate the week before or after! With any luck, your efforts can have a lasting impact on not only your community, but your company culture too.
1. Make kind gestures a way of life.
Did you know that even just witnessing a “random act of kindness” can inspire others? One survey found that 83% of young Americans were inspired to do a random act of kindness when receiving one themselves. So why not pay it forward and inspire others to pass it on? Whether you’re buying a latte for someone in your office who’s having a tough day, or giving a sincere—and unexpected—compliment, remember that kind gestures multiply, and it never hurts to put in the extra effort to make someone's day.
2. Volunteer together.
Some companies, like Office Depot, designate a day where employees can get out in the community and volunteer as a team. One recent project was transforming Pine Grove Elementary school in West Palm Beach, Florida: Nearly 600 employees convened to paint an indoor mural for the students and clean up the school’s exterior. Each year employees choose events and projects that are significant to them, and share their positive influence through social media with the hashtag #DepotDifference.
Appropriate World Humanitarian Day events could include identifying a project for your team to undertake, such as sorting canned goods at a food bank, helping at a women’s shelter, reading to students at a local elementary school, or cleaning up outdoor park areas.
3. Collect items to fill a need.
With the back-to-school shopping season in full swing, now is a great time to help families who might need a little help with the many expenses that arise at this time of year. Consider checking with local elementary schools to see if you can help collect supplies to donate to classrooms in case some kids aren’t able to supply their own. Talk to a school counselor about items that kids might need, like gently used clothing and backpacks.
For World Humanitarian Day 2018, encourage fellow employees to clean out their own closets and bring in items that can have a second life, either at a local school or another organization that collects and distributes items. Employees who don’t want to donate items could give money instead, as non-profits are always looking for cash donations to fill the gap with items they don’t receive.
As a team, you can package up the donation and make the delivery yourselves as part of your World Humanitarian Day events.
4. Encourage a culture of respect.
Finally, there is nothing more important than committing to showing respect for all opinions, viewpoints, and team mates in your workplace on a daily basis. World Humanitarian Day 2018 is the perfect reminder for your office to commit to that ethos, every day.
