Now's the time of year when new college students are packing up their possessions for their freshman year. It can be an agonizing time. Should they take along the things that will make them feel at home, or pack just the essentials? What are those essentials, anyway? Here is our categorized, cross-gender packing list to ensure that you don’t get caught short in the dorm room.
Computer/audio visual.Laptop computer. Flat-screen TV and DVD player. HDMI cable. Printer and spare ink or toner. Power strip with surge protector. Double socket adaptor with USB outlets (for sharing outlets with others on the go). USB flash drive. Headphones (noise cancelling). eBook reader. Cellphone. Spare charger.
Equipment. Food storage containers. Bottle opener. Plates. Cutlery. Glasses. Water bottle. Insulated coffee mug. Keep cooking supplies basic – kitchen knife and sharpener, mixing bowl, whisk, measuring cup, cooking spoon, flipper. Basic herb kit (pick 5). Drying rack. Kettle. Coffee maker or French press. Oven mitt. Paper cups and plates for parties. Ziploc bags.
Our single biggest tip for incoming first-year college students is to get in touch with their roommate(s) ahead of time, and run this list by them. This list covers your complete dorm room experience, and your roommates will probably have similar ideas. Make sure that you don’t duplicate items to avoid cluttering your room. When you have a final list of items to source and pack, look for small, sturdy luggage options. Where possible, choose collapsible luggage to save extra space.
Also, check your college’s policy on items to ensure that you’re allowed certain appliances and that they are not already provided.
Armed with this list and these tips, you can be ready to take on the coming academic year like a champ. Happy studying!
