Making the Perfect Gift for Mom: Homemade Jewelry Holder
July 20, 2017
Shopping for mom isn't always easy. You want to find something she loves, but how are younger kids supposed to have enough money to get a special present? Instead of hitting the stores to find a gift for mom, make something closer to her heart. Jewelry holders are the perfect gifts from kids to show mothers their children appreciate everything they do. These unique gifts for mom are simple enough for a child to tackle but special enough to be cherished and displayed on a dresser shelf forever. Teach students how to make a fantastic gift for their moms or encourage your own child's artistic passions using these instructions for building a stylish jewelry holder.
Step 1: Pick a Box With Personality
Unlike most craft projects, you don't have to start with a blank canvas. Get a head start by building on an existing design. Find a small box, such as a chocolate box with appealing colors or bold patterns. If you want to teach a group of children how to build a jewelry holder of their own, buy small boxes in bulk that come in a variety of colors. The more color options you give them, the more their artistic visions can shine through.
For even more artistic freedom, give them white boxes to decorate with paint, glitter or patterned tape. Let them decide what colors to paint the boxes. Ask them what colors they think their mothers will enjoy, then have them make boxes using that color scheme. This is the perfect opportunity to teach school-age children about the color wheel and how colors complement each other.
Step 2: Create Cozy Compartments
The most important goal of the jewelry holder is to have a wide range of compartment options to place jewelry inside. Chocolate boxes, especially truffle boxes, come built with many compartments perfect for housing rings, necklaces and bracelets. You can also find small boxes to fit inside of the jewelry box if it doesn't have compartments included already. Paint the inside frames gold or silver, and when dry, place them inside the box.
Step 3: Bedazzle the Jewelry Holder
Make your jewelry holder resemble a sparkling piece of jewelry. Buy a packet of plastic faux gems to decorate the outside of the jewelry box. Paint a thin layer of glue onto the bottom of each gem, and then press the gems onto the top or sides of the jewelry box.
Glitter glue is another tool that gives children even more opportunity to express their artistic visions for their gifts. Use the glue to create shapes, such as hearts, or spell out the child's mother's name using the glitter and faux gems. Create a knob to place on the lid of the jewelry box using a tall bead with a gem glued to the top.
Homemade gifts are among the most treasured. These gifts require time, thought and hard work. When children give a homemade gift to a mom or dad, they also give them the gift of childhood memories. A homemade jewelry box offers a glimpse into what a child was like at a certain age. Parents and children get the chance to look back on these gifts years later with a renewed sense of appreciation and a healthy sense of humor.
