The seasons continue to change but with the many distractions we all have, are we appreciating the changes in flora and fauna? Start getting children excited with fun art projects. With just a few simple materials, you can provide your kids with what they need to express their creativity, learn new skills and make art projects they can be proud of. Spark creativity by pointing out the flowers, plants and trees you see outside and encourage kids to make festive crafts based on what is around them. All you’ll really need for the kids to produce crafts that can be treasured forever are the art supplies and ideas.
Blossoming Trees and Flowers
Kids of all ages can make flowers and flowering trees out of all sorts of craft materials. Try making tissue paper flowers anchored at the center with big, bright buttons, with pipe cleaners as stems. Another simple way to make flowers is to paint doilies with water colors, then connect them to pipe cleaner or construction paper stems.
To make a simple blossoming tree with a Japanese feel, glue brown yarn on a piece of paper to form the trunk and branches. Add cherry blossoms by scrunching up tiny bits of pink tissue paper and gluing them in place on the branches.
Even the youngest children can create festive flower crafts by dotting paint on a piece of paper and then, with your help, cutting it into flower shapes. Glue these flowers onto construction paper to create a card or picture. Another simple art project for the young ones involves painting one tongue depressor green to serve as a stem. Next, paint many tongue depressors bright colors and glue them in place in layers, forming a circle centered at the top of the stem to create a fun wooden flower.
Are flowers blooming in your area? Create a movable scene using paper plates, construction paper, glitter and cotton balls. Cut a paper plate in half, and fill it with your area’s flowers and trees. Divide a second paper plate in half, and create a sunny scene on one half and a rainy sky on the other. Use yellow and orange construction paper for the sun, cotton balls for the clouds and glitter for the rain. Connect the plates with a brad, so you can spin your scene from sun to rain.
Preschoolers love hands-on art projects that aren't too challenging for motor skills that are still developing. Create a sun shower scene with rainbows using sponges. Dab paint on a damp sponge in the colors of the rainbow from top to bottom, then put the sponge in your child's hand and let him start swiping it across large swaths of paper. This is a great craft for kids who are learning color names.
A Gift For Mother
Mom’s deserve so much credit and a thank you is well deserved. Showing appreciation to them is traditionally associated with gifts of cut flowers, so making a vase to hold the flowers is an ideal art project for the day. Older kids can use very thin masking tape to make designs on a glass vase, then spray paint the vase and peel off the tape to create an attractive flower-holder that Mom can appreciate.
Kids with an interest in science can head to the kitchen to make a sea salt spray to help their moms enjoy beachy, textured hair whenever they want. This craft combines sea salt, epsom salt and natural oils. Put it in a small spray bottle, and decorate the bottle to create an impressive gift.
Every mom loves pictures of her kids. You can create a unique gift that's far more interesting and enduring than the traditional macaroni glued on a wooden frame by using the simple art of decoupage. Start with a small canvas, and use decoupage glue to cover it with a swatch of fabric of your choice. Use a photo editing program to create a large black-and-white image from a favorite photo, then print it on normal paper. Trim the photo around the edges of the child's image, then decoupage it onto the fabric.
These art projects are ideal for preschool, kindergarten and elementary school classes. Best of all, you can also make them at home. Keep plenty of craft materials on hand so you're always ready to get your kids started on something creative.
