All You Need to Secure Your Wireless Devices and Home Network
July 17, 2017
How far does your home network extend outside your home? If you can connect to your WiFi in your yard or in a home office, it's likely that others can connect to it as well. Home network security is absolutely critical. Learn how to secure your network with ease and confidence.
Open Network, Open Season
The first thing to do is look at how you connect to your network. If your home network is listed as "open" or has a shield with an exclamation mark next to it, anyone can connect to it. In some cases, that can be a good thing, particularly if you're operating a business and using the network as a free WiFi hot spot. In most cases, however, you want to secure your home network to prevent others from accessing it.
This is only the first step to completely securing your home network. Some routers allow you to prevent any form of access to your home network, other than your own. When you open your router's page again, you should see something like "MAC Address Control" or "Media Access Control." A MAC address is simply an identification code for your WiFi adapter.
MAC Address, Max Security
To find the MAC address, check your router's DHCP client list. Look for DHCP, and then look for "client list" or similar wording. You should see a list of MAC addresses that have recently connected to the router and the names of the computers they're associated with. Check for the one that is yours, and note it down. You'll also want to include any other devices that you recognize. "Android," for example, often means a phone or a tablet that's connected to the router.
It's surprisingly easy to secure your home network, so you can prevent unwanted access to your router and Internet connection. If you feel you need more extensive home network security, consider investing in separate firewalls or use wired connections throughout the house.
