A first aid kit should contain a variety of bandages in many different shapes and sizes. You can select from self-adhesive bandages for wound care or small bandages with whimsical designs to calm children with cuts or scrapes. With multiple sizes, designs and features, such as waterproof or breathable construction, these first aid necessities can provide solutions for many different needs.

Flexible Construction

For wounds and cuts near joints, you can select flexible bandages, as they move with your skin to stay in place. They're made from plastic or stretchy fabric and some also have perforations to allow air to circulate between the skin and the surface of the dressing.

Variety of Shapes

Wounds come in all shapes and sizes, which is why bandages come in a variety of options to provide a generous covering for cuts, incisions, and other injuries. Specialized designs include fingertip and knuckle coverings. When attending to surgical wounds or incisions, you can place elastic bandage wraps over any gauze protecting the affected area. These wraps typically come in rolls and can be cut to size for a custom fit. Traditional rectangular adhesive bandages generally work best for minor cuts and scrapes.

Medicated Bandages

Medicated bandages can provide an added layer of protection against potential infection with antibacterial medication in the pad. This can be a better option for those prone to infection or if your medical care professional advises taking this extra precaution. When you restock your first aid kit, consider a variety pack of medicated bandages.

Self-Adhesive Backing

While some dressings may need medical tape to stay in place, many bandage designs already include a self-adhesive backing. This keeps the wound or scrape covered and can also be easy to tend to as needed. Simply remove the bandage as necessary, and replace it with a new one. There may not be a need for extra tape, and the bandages can stay securely in place to provide a reliable wound covering. You can also find waterproof adhesive strips which are safe for the shower or while washing dishes.

Child-Friendly Designs

Keep a supply of bandages that feature child-friendly designs to take some of the sting out of a skinned knee or paper cut. These can include cartoon characters or bright colors and many have gentle adhesive for easy, pain-free removal. When caring for an older child, consider bandages with clear designs for a less noticeable approach to wound care.
