Metal detectors are handy tools suitable for a variety of situations when the user needs to identify the presence of metal nearby. Whether for security purposes or for looking for metal deposits or lost items, a metal detector can be one of the most useful of electrical tools. When browsing tools and equipment, consider how useful a metal detector will be, whether for use at home, work or venturing out into the field.

Operation

Most metal detectors operate by detecting changes in magnetic waves that are caused by metal. The most common types of metal detectors operate on very low frequencies. These are called VLF detectors. They operate by using two coils. One coil acts as a transmitter and the other acts as a receiver. The transmitter sends out low-frequency magnetic fields, which are reflected by any metal objects that may be present. The second coil receives and amplifies any reflections, resulting in an audio tone to indicate the detection of metal.Other detectors make use of pulse induction (PI) and beat frequency oscillation (BFO). Pulse induction detectors are usually used in security operations. They make use of only one coil to transmit and then listen for any signals. BFO detectors operate similar to VLF models, but lack their fine-tuning qualities, making them more susceptible to interference and inaccurate readings.

Handheld Security Scanners

Use a handheld metal detector in situations where security is of the utmost importance, such as schools, stadiums and indoor and outdoor events. Most handheld scanners are adjustable for settings of high and low sensitivity.

General-Purpose Metal Detectors

If you're having trouble finding that lost piece of jewelry or want to try to find treasures on the beach, consider a general-purpose metal detector. Most detectors have sensitivity controls, so you can make adjustments depending on the situation. Some models even feature LCD screens, so that you can monitor your progress as you go along.
