Are printer paper and copy paper the same?

Printer and copy paper are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between the two that can affect the quality of your print jobs.

Printer Paper: This is usually a higher quality paper compared to regular copy paper. It's designed to produce a superior image quality, making it ideal for printing important documents, photos, and graphics where clarity is crucial. Printer paper can come in many different types, weights, and finishes, depending on the desired result.

Copy Paper: This type of paper is commonly used for everyday printing needs, like text documents, faxes, and quick prints. It's typically inexpensive and lighter weight compared to printer paper. Copy paper is designed to work well for a high volume of standard black and white printing in copy machines. So, while you can use either in most situations, you might find one more suitable for your specific needs or the final presentation desired.

What paper should you use for your printer?

  • Copy Paper - is designed for high volume black and white printing in copy machines. It’s often used for text documents, faxes, and quick prints due to being less expensive and lighter weight compared to other printer paper.
  • Card Stock – is heavier and more durable than regular printing paper. It’s ideal when you want your prints to be sturdier and longer lasting. Cardstock is often used when printing: business cards, certificates, or invitations.
  • Photo Paper – used when printing high-quality photographs or images due to it’s ability to reproduce color and detail more accurately than regular printer paper. Glossy and matte finish are available to enhance your photo even further.
