How to Remove Adhesive Tape

While very versatile, adhesive tape also is useful and a must have for any home or office. However, is it safe to use on all surfaces? The answer to that question really depends on the type of surface the adhesive tape is applied to and whether or not it can be safely removed.

• Doors, Walls and Other Wooden Surfaces: Consider using a hairdryer, as hot air applied to the tape for a minute or two should soften the hold the glue has on the wood. Try peeling the tape off with your finger, a nail file, a butter knife or any other similar tool. Once the tape is removed, the adhesive residue can be cleaned with warm, soapy water or a small amount of vinegar.
• Glass: Standard glass cleaners are often effective at removing adhesives from glass. If you find that doesn’t work or you don’t have any handy, consider water mixed with a few drops of vinegar and dish soap.
• Paper: Hairdryers are probably your best bet for removing adhesives from paper, but avoid using this method on photographs, as the heat could damage the image.
• Fabrics: Should you encounter a situation where an adhesive needs to be removed from your favorite item of clothing, try throwing the garment in the freezer. Freezing the glue should make it brittle and easy to break and scrape off clothes. For fabrics that cannot be thrown into the freezer, such as carpets, try the same method of freezing but use ice cubes in a bag or rag. Once the large pieces of adhesive have been removed, household stain removers should finish the job.
• Electronics: Once you’ve peeled the majority of the sticker or tape off of your laptop or other electronic item, try rubbing duct tape or another sticky tape over the surface of the adhesive residue. If that doesn’t do the trick, a dab of olive oil or other cooking oil on a paper towel is often effective. If all else fails, chemical cleaners such as Goo Gone or even WD-40 in small doses can work. However, be certain to check the chemical labels for information on potentially damaging your electronic device.
