Give Mom What She Needs This Mother's Day

Create a Personal Space to Call Her Own

Mother's Day is the perfect time of year to think about creating a "mom space" for her. We often hear "man cave" as an expression that evokes a private space where dad can unwind, relax and get away from the outside world surrounded by things that reflect his hobbies and personality.

A mom space is a similar concept that turns a room in the house or other space into a relaxing private retreat that's all hers.  The whole family can get involved in suggesting and selecting items to help create a private and unique space where she can focus on her favorite things, whether it's crafting, reading or using her tablet or laptop, chatting with friends or just spending quiet time meditating or doing yoga. The whole point is that it is hers and hers alone.

Whether she uses an outdoor space, such as a garden shed, or a more traditional indoor space such as a separate bedroom, den or even the basement, there are a multitude of inexpensive ways to customize the space.  Her mom space can be created as a refuge that is versatile yet also functional. Keep these ideas in mind as you help her create her "me time" room.

Make it Budget Friendly

Consider cost effective ways to help decorate the room or space, using posters, stickers or other arts and crafts that are indicative of her style. A little bit of color and design goes a long way and doesn't have to cost much. You can also use artificial or blooming flowers, plants and other decorative greens to give the space a sense of the peaceful outdoors. Together, you can add a coat of fresh paint in a color that suits her and helps create an attractive, serene ambience.

The Choices Abound

Consider outfitting the space with some great furniture, such as a desk or drafting table. Make good use of comfy furnishings, seating and inspirational wall art for a writing room, or install a work bench and some shelves to store crafting or other accessories.

The mom space can, in fact, be anything she wants it to be. Make it a shared project to help her decorate, giving her the flexibility and freedom to be part of the design decisions. You can also turn it into a Mom's day party event and invite family members and friends who might enjoy being part of the fun.  If she likes yoga, for example, consider a space for storing mats and yoga balls, while leaving room for practicing the art of yoga itself.

Flexible Organization

Regardless of how mom decides to organize her space, it makes sense to keep everything in a safe, organized place, with all items tucked in place, especially if there are small children at home.  Consider optimizing the space with attractive and functional furnishings, such as storage cabinets, shelving, bookcases and bins. Use small containers to organize large quantities of items that can easily cause disarray. While you're at it, consider outfitting her with some personalized items that help her stay organized.  Our new TUL Personalized Discbound Notebooks are the perfect organizer, and the cover can be monogramed with her initials to convey an extra touch.  And with accessories like insertable Life, Fitness, and Travel planners, mom will really appreciate being set up for success.

Wrap it Up in Time for Mother's Day

Leverage Mother's Day as the opportunity to recognize mom on this special day and let her know not only how much you care, but how much you respect her privacy, individuality and need for alone time. Consider a family gift with small boxes holding some of the items you know she'll like and a big sign that says "Welcome to your Mom Space."  All in all, this Mother's Day gift will be one she'll appreciate all year long.
