The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a nationwide network of parents, guardians, teachers, students, businesses, and community liaisons devoted to students’ educational success. The organization was founded in 1897 by two mothers who convened a group of parents concerned about education in Washington, D.C.
Today, there are more than 20,000 PTA units nationwide. Most elementary schools and middle schools have a PTA, as do high schools and even some preschools. (You can find a PTA to join in your area here.)
A parent-teacher organization (PTO) is essentially any similar group that’s not officially part of the national PTA organization but has a similar mission of engaging parents and educators in school-related matters.
Why Join a PTA or PTO?
Whether you join a PTA or PTO, these groups give parents and guardians a voice and active role in their child’s educational experience. They participate in a vast range of initiatives in schools, from working to enrich the learning environment for students and raising money for school initiatives to increasing nutritional food options in the cafeteria.
Many PTAs and PTOs have subgroups or committees that oversee various aspects of their mission — so you can join a subgroup that aligns with your particular concern or interest.
Parents who join a PTA or PTO are likely to be far more engaged in their child’s education, as they can attend regular meetings where school issues are discussed and receive email updates.
Students also benefit when their parents get involved with their education. Various studies have shown that parental involvement increases a child’s grades and test scores while improving attendance and overall behavior.
