Must-Haves for Your Emergency Kit

Water Supplies

At minimum, plan to have a 3 day water supply with at least 1 gallon of water per day, per person in your emergency kit. This ensures that everyone has enough water per day to drink and stay clean. Gallon jugs of water or water bottles are ideal, and sealed containers are the best option to avoid contamination during storage.

Food Supplies

Some inclement weather situations last only a few hours, while others could persist for multiple days. When storing food and water supplies, keep enough to ensure everyone has enough for at least three days; two weeks is best when possible. Stock up on non-perishable foods, such as dry rice and beans, canned foods, and military-style MRE rations. Stick to foods that are easy to prepare on a grill or open flame in case of loss of power.

Storage Container

Build up the best emergency kit possible by using these simple tips as a starting point. Begin with these basic supplies and use a plastic storage tub or large trunk to keep everything in one convenient spot to stay prepared for the next natural disaster. A basic survival kit keeps your family safe and prevents panic, since you know you are safe for the first few days or two weeks of a disaster.
