Rebecca Boenigk
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Rebecca Boenigk is literally "sitting pretty" these days following the successful launch and growth of an ergonomic chair business.
When Boenigk and her mother, Jaye Congleton, started Neutral Posture Inc. in 1989, they raised $50,000 and ran with a concept that was not widely known. Back then, they worked out of their home's garage focusing on small contracts and developing a market for their business. Today, the mother-daughter team promotes their ergonomic chairs using sales representatives nationwide. Consequently, they've successfully won customers and business opportunities including $17 million in net sales in fiscal year 2000 and an ongoing vendor relationship with Office Depot Inc.
"It is a joy and privilege to work with Office Depot," Boenigk said. "They truly stand behind, believe in and carry out the principles behind their diversity program. Office Depot truly does walk the walk regarding diversity."
While Neutral Posture's primary focus is to be the leading provider of ergonomic solutions, Boenigk has simultaneously led the company's efforts to provide opportunities that help future entrepreneurs. The company's Diversity Business Development Program is designed for minority-owned, women-owned, non-profit and not-for-profit businesses, and for major corporations who support these kinds of businesses to be competitive in today's marketplace. Neutral Posture spends more than 7% of its total spending on minority- and women-owned business enterprises and the company plans to increase its total spending to 15% during the next two years.
Boenigk and the company's commitment to business and diversity have earned several accolades. Last year, Boenigk was named the 2002 Office Depot Business Woman of the Year. During the past year, she was also elected to serve in 2003 and 2004 as chair of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council Women's Forum. Boenigk was first nominated in 1997 to be part of WBENC, the nation's leading advocate of women-owned businesses that serve as suppliers to America's corporations. In 1997, Ernst and Young recognized Boenigk as the co-recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in manufacturing for the Houston region.
