With an analog modem, it's easy to connect a computer to dial-up Internet and send faxes from a desktop computer or laptop over a telephone line. Analog modems allow computers to transmit and receive information in the form of a fax, which is great in rural areas.

Different Types of Analog Modems

There are three general types of fax modems available - internal modems, external modems and soft modems. Internal and external modems are distinguished by their particular installation needs. Whereas an internal analog modem is a card that installs into a computer's PCI slot or other expansion slot, an external analog modem is a compact device that connects to a computer via an available USB port or serial port. External fax modems are portable and simple to set up. Look for USB bus-powered external modems to eliminate the need for an additional power supply. Soft modems are software-based systems rather than hardware-based systems and perform most modem functions using software. The benefit of a soft analog modem is that it's extremely easy to update.

Analog Modem Speed

Fax modem speed and transmission rates are represented with the letter V and a following number, like V.90 and V.92. To ensure rapid data transmission, select an analog modem with a high transmission rate number.

Convenience Features

Lightning strikes can and often do result in modem failure. Modems with built-in lightning protection guard against harmful surges that travel along telephone lines to keep your connection secure and safe.If you're in an environment where broadband or cable connections are available, look for additional modems in the cable modem section.
